New Zealand rules worth knowing
- No customs duty on used passenger cars — GST at 15% is the main tax.
- Every car needs entry certification (compliance) before registration.
- Vehicles under 20 years old must meet frontal impact and emissions standards.
- The Clean Car Standard CO2 charge is paid by the importer and varies by model.
- Biosecurity is strict: mud, seeds or insects mean a steam clean and re-inspection.
Australia rules worth knowing
- A Vehicle Import Approval through ROVER must be granted before the car ships.
- Cars 25 years or older skip RAW compliance — that is why R32/R33 GT-Rs are popular.
- Newer stock must be on the SEVS register and complied by a Registered Automotive Workshop.
- Japanese-origin passenger cars are duty free under the Japan–Australia EPA; GST is 10%.
- Luxury Car Tax applies above the threshold unless the car is 30+ years old.
