Nissan Skyline GT-R

日産 スカイライン GT-R

Years
1989–1994
Engine
RB26DETT 2.6L twin-turbo inline-six
Power
206kW claimed (widely accepted as underrated)
Price in Japan
¥3.5m–¥9m depending on grade, mileage and originality

The car that made Group A racing boring and Japan's export trade interesting. ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive, Super HICAS rear steering, and the most tuner-supported engine ever put in a Japanese road car.

What costs money

  • Rear strut towers, rear quarters and the boot floor for rust — northern-Japan cars are the worst offenders.
  • Oil pump drive collar failure on high-revving engines; a rebuilt motor with a fixed collar is a plus, not a minus.
  • Turbo ceramic wheel failure on unmodified cars. Steel replacements are common and desirable.
  • Cut springs, no-name coilovers and welded diffs — cheap modifications usually mean a hard life.

What a good one looks like

  • Auction grade 3.5 or better with a clean structural diagram.
  • Original wheels, original ECU and a records folder (整備記録簿).
  • V-Spec / V-Spec II badging matched by the chassis plate, not just the boot lid.

Importing one

Over 25 years old, so it clears Australia's SEVS age exemption and needs no RAW compliance. Straightforward for New Zealand entry certification.
